Mathias Gold (Kevin Kline) is a down-on-his-luck New Yorker who uttered a Parisian flat from his estranged father. However, if he arrives in France to market the huge domicile, he is shocked to locate. His flat is a viager - an early French realestate system with complex rules related to its own resale value - and also the feisty Englishwoman Mathilde Girard (Maggie Smith), who has lived at the flat with her son Chloé (Kristin Scott Thomas) for several years, can contract collect monthly premiums from Mathias until her death.
